A Night of Inspiration at the Mr Squiggle and Friends Exhibition Opening

On a chilly July Canberra evening, I had the immense honour of attending the opening of Mr Squiggle and Friends at the National Museum of Australia — a heartfelt exhibition celebrating 40 years of Australia’s beloved “man from the Moon” as well as his early work as an amazing cartoonist.

Mr Squiggle was an enormous part of my childhood and inspired me to become the puppeteer I am today. Like so many Australians, I grew up watching upside-down pictures, enchanted by the creativity and charm of a pencil-nosed puppet who turned scribbles into masterpieces. So to be present at this event was not only nostalgic, it was deeply affirming of the path I’ve chosen in life.

Rebecca Hetherington, daughter of creator Norman Hetherington and who was also the show’s final presenter during the 1990s, delivered a moving speech that transported us into the world her father built — full of imagination, ingenuity, and heart. It was both a celebration and a family tribute, and I felt incredibly privileged to witness it.

Puppeteer Murray Raine, mentored by Norman himself, gave an extraordinary marionette performance that left me in awe. His artistry and dedication to the craft reminded me of the timeless magic of puppetry. I also had the pleasure of meeting Norman’s grandson, Tom Hetherington-Welch, a gifted puppeteer continuing the family legacy.

This exhibition opening reminded me of why I do what I do — and why I’ve made the bold decision this year to return fully to puppetry and the arts. It’s moments like these that reinforce how powerful, transformative, and joyful this art form can be.

I am also honoured to be presenting puppetry workshops for children at the museum during these school holidays — an opportunity to pass on the same spark that lit my creative fire as a child.
