STARTS Wednesday, 19 July 2023, 6-8pm (AEDT). Term includes 8 x weekly 2-hour live online classes.

This course aims to bring together people who are motivated to develop their confidence and conversational skills in the Dutch language through small-group, live online lessons. This course promotes inclusivity for Dutch language enthusiasts and welcomes people of different skill levels in the Dutch language to participate and engage at their pace. This course is not suitable for complete beginners with no experience.

To join, you will need to be able to speak and understand basic Dutch sentences and comprehend basic language structures. To check if you are suitable for this course, please read through this SELF ASSESSMENT page.

Typical students in this course may have one of the following:

  • Studied at least one term of Dutch previously;

  • Have done extensive self-study (beyond Duolingo);

  • Have family members who have spoken Dutch to them when they were young;

  • Have lived in the Netherlands for a period of time;

  • Or a combination of the above.

The content covered in this course may include; dialogues in authentic situations, poems, cartoons, songs, short videos, and specially adapted readers can be used as a starting point for conversation. Students will be encouraged to participate in language games, role play, listening and speaking exercises. Special exercises will also be used to help with responding to questions. To fully benefit from the course, students are expected to prepare and revise in between lessons.

Classes are taught by Marion, who is a passionate native Dutch speaker and professional teacher with over 30 teaching years experience.

Currently only available to adult learners.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this course, most students will have:

  • developed conversational skills,

  • strategies to better understand and speak Dutch in everyday situations,

  • improved fluency, pronunciation and sentence structure,

  • more familiarity with Dutch culture,

  • the ability to engage in conversations in various situations, including expressing opinions on a variety of topics.

The pace of the course will vary according to the group.
