Not sure what group you belong in? To move to a group beyond Dutch 1, you should have some familiarity with most of the topics below. For Dutch 2 you should be able to recognise, understand and apply some of the topics below. For Dutch 3, you will be familiar with most of the topics below and can apply them in sentences without peaking at your notes. Please note that not all levels are delivered at all times.

    Dutch 1:
    “I’ve never learned Dutch before, or I only know a few words from family or travel.” This level is perfect if you’re starting fresh or rebuilding basics.

    Dutch 2:
    “I’ve done some Dutch before, can have basic conversations, but feel stuck.” This level is great if you’ve learned before but feel a bit rusty.

    Dutch 3:
    “I can already speak Dutch fairly well but want to improve fluency and confidence.” This level is for confident speakers ready to expand and refine.

    You are able to use and understand simple sentences in the following topics:

    You are able to understand the following grammar:

    Articles: de, het, een

    Nouns singular & plural: e.g. man - mannen, vrouw - vrouwen

    Adjectives (describing words): e.g. mooi - mooie, klein - kleine

    Personal pronouns: e.g. ik, jij, hij, zij, etc.

    Possessive pronouns (verbs): e.g. mijn, jouw, zijn / haar etc.

    Question words: e.g. wie, wat, waar, wanneer, etc.

  • Can you apply? (Dutch 2 & 3)

    You are able to apply the following grammar in simple sentences:

    Present tense: e.g. ik werk, hij / zij werkt

    Irregular verbs: zijn / hebben
    e.g. Ik ben, hij / zij is, etc. / Ik heb, hij / zij heeft, etc.

    Reflexive verbs: e.g. zich wassen => ik was me, hij / zij wast zich

    Negatives: e.g. Hij werkt niet / Zij heeft geen werk

    Questions: e.g. werkt hij / zij?

  • Tenses (Dutch 2 & 3)

    You are familiar with the following tenses and how to use them:

    Present tense is: Ik werk hard (I work hard) - Ik ben ziek (I am sick)

    Past tense in Dutch? e.g. Ik werkte hard (I worked hard) - Ik was ziek  (I was sick) 

    Present perfect tense in Dutch? e.g. Ik heb hard gewerkt (I have worked hard) - Ik ben ziek geweest (I have been sick)

  • Am I suitable for Dutch 2 or 3?

    If you are confident in using and understanding items from these columns, you would be suitable for Dutch 3.

    If you are only familiar with some of these, then choose Dutch 2.

Dutch 1

Overview:

Learn Dutch from scratch, no experience required! This course teaches basic Dutch with the main focus on speaking and understanding Dutch in everyday situations. In the process, learn more about Dutch customs, culture and history. Students will be encouraged to participate in speaking exercises, role-plays, dialogues, and group activities. Classes are taught by Marion, who is a passionate native Dutch speaker and professional teacher with over 30 teaching years experience.

Currently only available to adult learners.

Outcomes:

By the end of the 8-week course, most students will have acquired enough language to engage in simple conversations in various situations.

The pace of the course and what is covered will vary according to the group.

Support materials:

Students will be provided with online support materials to assist with the online lessons. Support materials are not designed to be used without attending the corresponding lessons. Content will be added and adjusted as students progress throughout the course, tailored to the needs of the class. You will need a Google/Gmail account to access the support materials.

Learning:

This course includes 2 hours a week of guided group learning. To get the full benefits of the course, it is recommended that learners continue practicing between classes. Try to set aside at least 10mins everyday for independent study with the provided support materials. Little bits everyday can be more effective than one long study period, especially to achieve fluency and retention of vocabulary and grammar.

Requirements:

  • A stable internet connection

  • Working webcam and microphone

  • A quiet space with minimal background noise

  • A writing-pad and pen to take notes

  • Join 10 mins early to ask any questions or test your connection

  • A (free) Google account to access support materials

If you’ve completed a beginner Dutch course or already have a basic foundation in the language, this follow-up course is designed for adult learners to help you build your fluency and confidence in speaking Dutch. Over 8 weeks, you’ll continue developing your speaking, listening, and comprehension abilities through dynamic and interactive activities tailored to real-life situations.

In Dutch 2, you'll:

  • Deepen your understanding of essential grammar and sentence structures

Dutch 3

This course is for students who have completed the ‘Dutch 2’ course. If you have an equivalent level and you’re unsure if this course suits you, send an enquiry here prior to enrolling.

This course aims to further develop conversational skills for everyday situations through speaking and listening activities. Learners will increase their confidence in speaking and conversation, with a special focus on pronunciation, listening skills, sentence structure, and ways of saying things that are typically Dutch. Grammar, vocabulary and theory topics are adjusted and tailored to each class context. Dialogues in authentic situations, poems, cartoons, songs, short videos, and reading material can be used as a starting point for conversation.

Students can also be encouraged to participate in role play, listening and speaking exercises to help with responding to questions, improving sentence structure and grammar.

To fully benefit from the course, students are expected to prepare and revise in between lessons.

Classes are taught by Marion, who is a passionate native Dutch speaker and professional teacher with over 30 teaching years experience.

Outcomes:

By the end of this course, most students will have:

  • developed basic conversational skills,

  • strategies to better understand and speak Dutch in everyday situations,
